Victim identified in fatal February car crash near Portland airport

The 75-year-old man died at the scene after being struck by a woman who was driving “at a high rate of speed” on Northeast Marine Drive on February 23.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police have identified the person who died after being struck by a driver who faces several charges, including DUII and reckless driving, during a crash in February.

On February 23, at 11:25 p.m., the suspect, Maria I. Moncada, was driving “at a high rate of speed” on Northeast Marine Drive near Portland International Airport (PDX) when she veered out of the lane and hit the vehicle. in the back of a 2015 Fit that was stopped on the shoulder, police said. Moncada was then taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim, identified as Bonny J. Heyn, 75, of Portland, died at the scene. Police said Heyn's family had been notified of his death.

Moncada, 22, faces charges of first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants (alcohol) and reckless driving.

PPB said at the time that it was the 13th traffic-related death in Portland in 2024. That figure could be a higher number than the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tally, which excludes accidents involving suicides, private property and non-public roads. , non-motorized vehicles, medical events and deaths occurring more than 30 days after an accident.
