Vernon County Sheriff's Report

Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports the following ongoing activities for the year and narrative excerpts from the week ending June 29.

23/06 A police officer conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 14 in the town of Viroqua for speeding. The driver was eventually arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants, driving after revocation and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the Vernon County Detention Center where he was released on bail.

23/06 A citizen reported that his neighbor's dogs were on his property on County Road T in the Town of Franklin. The dog owner was issued a warning and informed that tickets would be issued if the dogs ran loose again.

23/06 Mara Hubele of Viola was driving northbound on State Highway 131 in the town of Whitestown when she approached a curve. Hubele was speeding and attempted to negotiate the curve but was unable to do so and struck the guardrail. Hubele reported no injuries. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

24/06 A police officer conducted a traffic stop on State Highway 35 in the town of Genoa. The driver was ticketed for going 79 mph in a 55 mph zone.

24/06 Philip Aaker, of La Crosse, struck a deer while driving northbound on State Highway 35 in the town of Genoa. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

24/06 William Espe, of Viroqua, was driving westbound on County Road NN in the town of Franklin when he struck a deer. Espe reported no injuries. The vehicle sustained minor damage and was not towed.

26/06 The Sheriff's Office was notified of a domestic incident in progress in the Village of Viola. It was reported that a male was breaking items and causing a disturbance. Two officers responded to the scene with the Kickapoo Valley Rescue Team as the female victim was injured. The assailant left the scene before officers arrived. He has not yet been located and a wanted poster has been sent to neighboring counties. Charges of domestic violence and domestic disorderly conduct are pending.

26/06 Katelyn Dehning, of Decorah, Iowa, was driving south on State Highway 35, De Soto Village, and struck a deer. Dehning was apparently uninjured. The vehicle sustained functional damage.

26/06 A police officer conducted a traffic stop on US Highway 14 in the town of Viroqua. The driver was ticketed for driving after suspension and given a warning for failure to have taillights on.

27/06 The sheriff's office received a 911 hang-up call from a location on Willow Road in the city of Hillsboro. The dispatcher was unable to get a response when he called the number back. A deputy responded and determined that a child had called 911. There was no emergency.

27/06 A bicyclist reported a confused man following her in her vehicle on the shoulder of State Highway 35 in the City of Bergen. She said he asked for directions to two separate businesses in the City of La Crosse, but his words didn’t make much sense. A deputy responded and located the man. It was determined he lived in the City of La Crosse and didn’t remember how to get home. A deputy guided the man to the City of La Crosse, where they met with a La Crosse Police Department officer, who said he would assist the man.

27/06 The Sheriff's Office was notified of a disorderly conduct incident in progress on East Center Street in the Village of Readstown. Officers responded and identified the offender. He was then taken into custody for battery, disorderly conduct and misdemeanor bail jumping. He was later released on bail.

28/06 A woman reported being pushed and refused to leave a residence on Sherry Lane in Jefferson. A deputy and several officers from the Viroqua Police Department responded to the scene. The men and women were separated overnight. Charges will be forwarded to the Vernon County Prosecutor's Office.

29/06 Kathleen Johnsrude, of Soldiers Grove, struck a deer while driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 14 in the town of Kickapoo. Johnsrude reported no injuries. The vehicle sustained minor damage.
