Vernon County Sheriff's Report

Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports the following current activities for the year and narrative excerpts for the week ending June 8.

6/2 A cyclist was bitten by a dog on County Road SS in the town of Liberty. This is the third dog bite at this residence since May 9, 2024. The owner was issued an animal bite order.

6/2 Wyatt Olson, of Cashton, was traveling westbound on Curti Road in the Town of Genoa when the front passenger's side wheel left the roadway to the right and drove the vehicle into the ditch. The vehicle traveled a short distance into the ditch. Olson attempted to stop, but the vehicle struck a utility pole. The vehicle was towed from the scene due to disabling damage. The utility pole sustained minor damage and Vernon Electric Cooperative was notified. No injuries were reported.

6/2 The Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a residence on Prestegard Road in the Town of Kickapoo for a domestic incident. A deputy responded to the scene and separated all parties. While at the residence, a vehicle pulled into the driveway and the driver was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants. There were also open intoxicants in the vehicle.

6/3 A citizen reported a suspicious vehicle driving past his home and up to his home on Hankins Road in the Town of Kickapoo. An officer responded to the scene but was unable to locate the vehicle. About two hours later, a Viroqua police officer located the vehicle in the town of Viroqua. A deputy and the officer made contact with the occupants. The occupants told suspicious stories, but no crime was committed and so they were released from the scene.

6/3 A horse was walking on the railroad tracks along State Highway 35 in the town of Bergen. When a deputy arrived, he located an Amish male and the horse. He was working on finding a trailer to pick up the horse.

6/3 The Sheriff's Office received a call regarding a physical incident at a residence on Avalanche Road in the Town of Webster. The caller reported that a woman was pushing someone and had destroyed the house by throwing and breaking things. They said the female put oranges in her hair thinking it would keep the bugs away. The woman left before deputies arrived, so she was put on the BOLO (be on the lookout) list. The woman was later located and taken into custody on charges of battery, disorderly conduct, felony bail jumping, and felony bail jumping. She is being held on $1,500 cash-only bail.

6/4 A woman reported that a man was drunk, threatening her and destroying property at their residence on Bakkom Road in the Town of Viroqua. Several deputies and officers from the Viroqua Police Department responded to the residence. Contact was made with the man, who became aggressive towards officers. He was arrested and taken to the Vernon County Detention Center for disorderly conduct and resisting/obstructing an officer. The man was released from the detention center after posting $150 cash bail and signing a recognizance bond.

6/5 A man showed up in Vernon County Court. He had an active warrant from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, so he was taken to the Vernon County Detention Center.

6/5 A deputy came across approximately 15 cows on County Road OK in the town of Harmony. There was no one at the residence, so he put all the cows back out to pasture.

6/6 Veronica Hoiland, Viroqua, was driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 14, Town of Viroqua, when she struck a deer. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. Hoiland reported no injuries.

6/8 The Sheriff's Office was notified that the stop sign at the intersection of Nottingham Road and State Highway 56 in the town of Jefferson had been stolen. The investigation is ongoing.

6/8 A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on East Broadway Street in the Town of Viroqua. The driver performed standardized field sobriety tests and passed. THC and drug paraphernalia were found on the passenger, so he received two citations.

6/8 A deputy came across approximately 15 cattle on County Road H in the Town of Union. The deputy helped a neighbor get them into their pasture, then continued looking for the owner. The owner was eventually identified and he brought the cattle onto his property.
