A 19-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly hitting a man and woman with a baseball bat during an argument in Ojai.

Deputies were called to the 300 block of East Ojai Avenue when someone reported seeing someone with a bat involved in a fight around 12:15 p.m.

Arriving deputies were told that a verbal confrontation between three people, two men and a woman, had escalated into a physical fight, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The suspect, identified as Reef Matte of Ojai, hit the 23-year-old man and the 28-year-old woman with the bat, the sheriff's department said.

It is unclear whether any of the victims were injured during the fight.

Matte was arrested and jailed on suspicion of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

It is unclear what prompted the initial argument.

Anyone with further information was asked to contact Detective Joseph Sharif at 805-477-7038.
