Velthuis Apartments are now open near 57th and Louise

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — A new apartment complex is now open on a bustling corner of Sioux Falls. These are the Velthuis apartments.

“I used to walk here when it was still an empty lot,” said Tiana Rivera, a tenant at the Velthuis Apartments.

For years, this space behind the mall at the corner of 57th and Louise sat empty, but a new apartment complex is now ready to open after years of planning.

“The Velthuis is a really, really special piece that we have. You know, as you looked at it, it's actually kind of an open space that a lot of people didn't realize existed here,” said Nate Welch, director of community relations. investors at Mailbox Money. “It's on the corner of 57th and Louise, right off the highway, very, very dense population that a lot of people wouldn't think of as a place with new development because it's right in the middle of all.”

That's one reason the new property is filling up as quickly as it's opening.

“It’s a safe area, for me coming from the East Coast and not knowing much,” Rivera said.

Rivera was one of the first tenants to move into the first building that opened in January; she says it was more than just the location that attracted her to her new home.

“Everything, it's spacious, I like the kitchen, I like the pool, I like the reaction, I like the gym, I like the parking lot that I have downstairs,” Rivera said .

“One of the things we're really keeping in mind is how we'll feel at home. So, you know, you think about the aspect of a person walking into a garage, that aspect of them driving into their own space,” Welch said. “The other part is we made sure we kind of had these big open spaces, so adding these extra touches like a pantry, floor to ceiling windows, makes it feel more open. “

Mailbox Money recently added several new multi-unit developments in Sioux Falls, all with the goal of creating elevated apartments.

“Sometimes apartments feel like it doesn't really feel like home. But when you can give them those options, they can choose what’s right for them,” Welch said.

The Velthuis will be hosting an open day on Thursday, June 6, from 4-7 p.m., with food trucks, drinks tents and tours of all the different units to choose from. Rents range from $845 for a studio to $1,555 for a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom unit.
