VB daycare sentenced to 28 years in prison for death of 4-month-old child

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A woman will spend 28 years in prison for the murder of a 4-month-old baby.

According to a release from the City of Virginia Beach, Shyan J. Csatlos, 43, was convicted of second-degree murder and child abuse/neglect on November 2, 2023 following a four-day trial.

Evidence provided by the Commonwealth indicates that on August 15, 2019, Csatlos began providing day care at his home to “NW,” then 3 months old. While in Csatlos' care, NW had to be taken to the hospital twice due to vomiting and extreme agitation.

NW's parents said that before coming into Csatlos' care, he was a happy, healthy baby.

On September 17, 2019, NW's mother dropped him off at Cstatlos' home and was seen on video footage taking a bottle. Shortly after, just before noon, Csatlos called 911, saying NW was unresponsive.

First responders arrived at the home and transferred NW to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) due to its temperature of 90.4 degrees Fahrenheit and purple and blue appearance.

NW remained at CHKD until his death on September 21, 2019.

Csatlos provided investigators with varying accounts of what happened, but was unable to provide an explanation as to why NW was unconscious in her care.

Several medical professionals, including CHKD doctors, provided testimony in which they determined that NW had suffered violent head trauma.

Judge Afshin Farashahi sentenced Csatlos to 50 years in prison, with 22 years suspended, exceeding Virginia state sentencing guidelines, which recommend a sentence of no more than 22 years and 8 months.
