Vasanth Ravi on Weapon: Glad to have had a fantastic action film early in my career

Tamil actor Vasanth Ravi eagerly awaits the release of his new film, Weapon

Vasanth Ravi for the gun

Actor Vasanth Ravi, known for his dark and brutal films, recently took a detour in the form of a light-hearted romantic comedy, Pon Ondru Kanden. But he is back in the genre with his upcoming film Weapon as Vasanth gears up for its June 7 release.

Enjoy 20 OTT platforms streaming South content including SunNXT, aha, ManoramaMAX, ZEE5 and more for just ₹75.

Not new to high intensity films, Vasanth Ravi teams up with veteran actor Sathyaraj in Weapon, directed by Guhan Seniappan. Hotelier, 7 years ago, Vasanth Ravi dared to change direction and become an actor.

“I think it was my patience that got me to this point. During my seven-year filmmaking journey, I realized that patience is my greatest strength. I entered the industry in 2017 with Taramani. There were delays in the releases of Taramani and Rocky and if I had lost patience, things would have ended for me,” Vasanth said in a conversation with OTTplay.

About the weapon

After succeeding in the genre that delves into the dark crevices of the human psyche, how different will Weapon be for him? “If we talk about genres, there are really only two: light and dark. The whole world is divided into positive and negative, light and darkness. In the same way, you can have comedy, drama and action in light and dark films. The weapon is somewhere in the area of Batman and the X-Men. It's a dark, superhuman story with science fiction elements. Guhan gave me references to some of the characters in those comics for my character, attitude and body language that he wanted,” the actor replies.

Vasanth says that for all his films, including Weapon and the upcoming Indra, he gets into the rhythm of his characters by using the clothes that the directors have created for him. “I want to be part of the vision of the filmmakers and when I enter the sets of the film, I expect the magic to be concocted with our collaboration. I feel this happens when I take all their input into account and try to deliver. I think it's something beyond us.

Vasanth, who has only shot one film at a time so far, recently visited several film sets simultaneously. He says it took him some getting used to, but he eventually got there. He adds: “In the past, they were able to adapt and even the shooting days were shorter. Today, things have changed and the way we approach the show has also changed. We think about doing research and preparing for our roles. I think last year I was shooting for Weapon, Jailer and Pon Ondru Kanden, and the patchwork for Asvins was underway. I was able to learn a lot and even if you make it easier to integrate an actor into the sets, it becomes a quick process. It is something that is acquired with experience.

Weapon, a fantastic film

When the script of Weapon came to Vasanth Ravi, he knew it would be a fantastic film starring Sathyaraj. “It’s been a while since we’ve seen some fantastic action in Tamil. So when I was approached for the film, my first thoughts were about the strength of the script and how much of Guhan's vision would translate into the film when audiences watch it. Once I heard it, I was sold, but I also wanted to know how he would technically handle the action parts. The CGI work should be convincing and these kinds of films rely a lot on post-production work,” he adds.

Vasanth adds that more than the actors, it is the employees who have a lot to do in the making of a film. He also praises the director's clear vision. “It will be a one-of-a-kind fantasy action film.”

Wanting to try a variety of genres, Vasanth Ravi ends the conversation by saying that he aspires to do period romantic dramas or full-fledged war films.
