Utica Police Identify Officer Who Shot Boy; Release Video of Foot Chase and Shooting

Utica, N.Y. — Utica police released body camera footage Saturday night from three officers involved in a foot chase that ended when one of them fatally shot a 13-year-old boy.

They also identified the officer who fired his weapon as Patrick Husnay, who has been with the department for six years.

Police said the videos showed the boy showing officers what turned out to be a replica Glock pellet gun.

The boy killed was Nyah Mway.

He and another boy were arrested around 10:18 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of Shaw Street.

Body camera video shows one of the officers asking Nyah to raise his hands to check if he has any weapons.

As he does so, Nyah suddenly runs into the street. The police ran after him and shouted several times at him to “stop stretching out his arms”.

Then they shout to “let it go”.

Another said: “He has a gun. »

Nyah is tackled to the ground after turning to face a police officer and appears to be pointing something in his direction. While Nyah and the police officers are on the ground, a gunshot rings out.

The officers moved away from the boy. The pursuit until the shooting lasted about 15 seconds.

A police officer picks up what looks like a handgun from the ground that was next to Nyah. He examines it for a few seconds and says he thinks it's a 22 caliber gun.

Police later said it was actually a replica Glock pellet gun.

Husnay, the officer who fired the shot, and two others involved in the pursuit — Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti — have been placed on paid leave.

Nyah and the other boy, also 13, were arrested because they matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects, police said in a statement Saturday evening.

The suspects were involved in at least two robberies and were described as “an Asian man and a dark-skinned man, one on foot and the other on a bicycle,” police said.

Nyah and the other boy, who was walking with a bicycle, were arrested by police based on this description and because they were in the area of one of the robberies around the same time he s It had occurred the night before, police said.

Police said they were also arrested while walking in the street, which is an offence.

Utica police said they have opened an internal investigation. The state attorney general's office has launched its own, as required by state law.

A replica Glock pellet gun was pointed at an officer during a foot chase on Friday, June 28, 2024, according to Utica Police.
