UTAH COUNTY, Utah — A 16-year-old boy was stranded on a hiking trail after a rock fell and broke his leg, Utah rescuers told media.

First responders responded to Red Ledges, a hiking area in Spanish Fork Canyon, at 7:22 p.m. on Friday, June 14, the Utah County Sheriff's Office announced in a June 15 news release.

A “big” rock fell and hit the teen's leg, breaking his femur, officials said, sharing video from the scene.

The boy was hiking when the rock hit him, KUTV reported.

It took three hours to save the teen, and video shows crews working late into the night by the light of headlamps. A helicopter was also used to help extract him from the rugged terrain, video shows.

The teenager was taken to hospital for treatment, emergency responders said. Authorities have not commented on the teen's condition.

Red Ledges is about 25 miles southeast of Provo.
