USC student to appear in court after fatal stabbing

The USC student who fatally stabbed a man who allegedly broke into cars on Greek Row will be arraigned Thursday.

Ivan Gallegos, 19, faces a murder charge after the confrontation with Xavier Cerf, 27, around 8:15 p.m. Monday in the 700 block of West 28th Street. He is being held on $2 million bail, according to jail records.

Gallegos and two friends were walking down the street when they spotted Cerf, a homeless man, allegedly breaking into a vehicle, and when they confronted him, an altercation began, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Gallegos claims he acted in self-defense and Cerf claimed he had a gun.

No firearm was found, police said, but Gallegos remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

The arraignment is scheduled for Thursday morning, although KTLA's Annie Rose Ramos reports it is expected to begin at 1:30 p.m.
