US allows Ukraine to use US weapons in Russia

US President Joe Biden has quietly given Ukraine permission to use US-made weapons in a limited area of Russia, as kyiv desperately tries to counter Moscow's advances in the Kharkiv region.

The move goes against Washington's policy of not allowing kyiv to use US-supplied weapons to strike inside Russia and reflects the seriousness of the situation in Russia's second-largest city. 'Ukraine.

“The President recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use U.S.-supplied weapons for counterfire purposes in the Kharkiv region, so that Ukraine can retaliate against Russian forces attacking or preparing to attack them,” a state statement said. The ministry representative said The National THURSDAY.

U.S. officials told AP that U.S. weapons could be used to strike inside Russia.

Although Mr. Biden approved weapons used in the defense of Kharkiv – a city in northeastern Ukraine that Russia captured at the start of its invasion and then retook kyiv in September 2022 – the decision does not reflect a broader policy change.

“Our policy regarding prohibiting the use of ATACMS [Army Tactical Missile Systems] or long-range strikes inside Russia have not changed,” the State Department said.

Russia made progress while Ukraine waited for the U.S. House of Representatives to decide whether to send $61 billion in military aid, which lawmakers approved last month.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who visited Kiev this month, suggested Wednesday that the United States was ready to “adapt” and “adjust” to the needs of the battlefield in Ukraine.
