Upstate death in shooting

The Spartanburg Coroner's Office says a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting. Deputies say they were called to northbound I-85 at mile marker 71 to help repair a single-car wreck. Police say the driver of the car fled into the woods and firefighters and a police officer located him. The driver asked them if they were law enforcement and after being told no, he told them he had a gun and asked them to say so. him when the police arrived. Four officers then went into the woods and located the suspect on the other side of a fence. Police say they gave the suspect verbal commands and he did not obey. Police then say the suspect lifted his shirt and grabbed something from his waistband. That's when all four deputies fired their weapons at the suspect. The coroner says Nicholas Daniel Austin Papala, 25, died from his injuries. No deputies were injured during the incident. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is now the lead investigating agency in the incident. PREVIOUS STORY: Update: All lanes are now reopened except one.
