UPDATE: Suspect in custody, 2 injured and 46 displaced after arson at California Motel – Southern Maryland News Net

UPDATE at 10:30 p.m.: On Monday, June 3, 2024, at approximately 8:05 p.m., police responded to the Super Eight Motel located at 22801 Three Notch Road, California for a reported active disturbance.

The 911 caller was an employee who said the occupants of room 310 on the third floor were in a disturbance, breaking windows and barricading the door.

Police arrived on scene a few minutes later and around 8:15 p.m., officers observed the suspect in the room starting a fire.

Due to this and the officers' quick response, the fire alarm was pulled by deputies and they began evacuating the motel while requesting fire and rescue.

48 firefighters from the Bay District, Hollywood, NAS Patuxent River, Leonardtown, Ridge, Valley Lee and Solomons responded.

The first arriving units spotted a fire coming from the third floor and several subjects were injured after jumping from the third floor.

Teams deployed two attack lines, entered the motel and began evacuating citizens. An adult woman and her child were helped out of the hotel where the woman subsequently suffered a medical emergency. She was transported to an area hospital. The child was evaluated and released to family custody.

A second patient was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

Deputies with the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office took the suspect, an adult male, into custody at the scene.

The American Red Cross intervenes to help 40 adults and 6 displaced children. No injuries to firefighters were reported.

The Maryland State Fire Department responded and is investigating the fire.

03/06/2024: On Monday, June 3, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m., firefighters responded to the Super 8 Hotel in California, Maryland for a report of a fire.

Units arrived on scene and discovered a fire coming from the third floor.

Police have one person in custody and it is believed to be arson.

Two adults and an infant were being evaluated by emergency medical services for injuries.
