UPDATE: Coroner and sheriff say woman's body found in Illinois River

HOLLIS TOWNSHIP, Ill. (WMBD) — A woman's body was pulled from the Illinois River and how it got there is under investigation, Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins said.

The sheriff said an employee of Mosaic Fertilizer, a business located in the 8700 block of Cargill Road, about a quarter-mile from that road's intersection with Illinois Route 9, reportedly found the body in the water around 1:45 p.m.

“An employee found a female body floating in the river approximately 20 feet from shore. It appears the female has been in the river for at least 24 hours,” Watkins said on the department’s Facebook page.

She was found floating in the river where the company was loading its barges.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the woman had no identification on her. She appeared to be between 18 and 40 years old. He said the body appeared to have been in the water for less than 48 hours.

Watkins said his office is working with the Peoria County Coroner's Office to identify the person found as well as the cause of death.
