Update | Bus driver killed in Font Hill crash identified | News

Police have identified the bus driver who died in a crash on the Font Hill Main Road in St Elizabeth on Thursday morning as Junior Ramsay, 50, of Fort Williams in Westmoreland.

Around 3am, Ramsay was transporting 18 passengers in his Toyota Hiace bus when the accident occurred.

Ramsay was taken to Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Fourteen of the passengers were injured.

Deputy Police Commissioner for Public Safety and Traffic Control Gary McKenzie said the reason for the crash was unclear.

“The bus crashed into a tree. In fact, the bus climbed the tree about 10 feet. When we examined the scene, it was clear that there were gap marks from the middle off the road, off the road, up to the tree,” McKenzie said. said.

“Based on the information we have gathered so far, it would appear that there was some level of distraction that caused the accident. At this time of the morning, there was not much traffic,” McKenzie added.

He urges public passenger transport operators to exercise caution on the roads.

“This bus was carrying 18 people, plus the driver. The driver unfortunately died and 14 people are in hospital and other medical facilities,” he added.

To date, around 180 people have died in road accidents in the parish.
