UPD releases body camera footage of 13-year-old shot dead

The Utica Police Department and the community they serve continue to deal with the officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening. Authorities say that around 10:18 p.m. on June 28, police conducted a stop on two juveniles in the 900 block of Shaw Street as part of an investigation.

One of the juveniles ran away during the stop, UPD said, and showed what appeared to be a handgun.

Police say an officer fired a shot, hitting the 13-year-old. The juvenile succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Wynn Hospital.

Utica police released details of the incident Saturday morning and held a news conference around 10:30 a.m. that morning. UPD Chief Mark Williams assured the public that his agency will be completely transparent about what it may share during this investigation.

Around 9:45 p.m., the Utica Police Department released body camera footage via Google Drive and identified the officers involved in the shooting.

The ensuing investigation determined that the young man was in possession of “a replica GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine,” according to police. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident to independently determine whether charges should be filed against the officer involved.

Utica police officials stressed they will continue to cooperate and be transparent in handling this tragic shooting. They pray for the healing of the city, its surroundings and the family of the 13-year-old minor.
