UNISFA opens investigation into killing of teenager in Abyei camp

June 26, 2024 (ABYEI) – The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) said it was investigating an incident in which a 16-year-old man was killed and another person injured in one of its camps in the disputed area. June 23, 2024.

This, UNISFA said in a statement on Tuesday, follows an alleged intrusion attempt that allegedly took place at one of the UNISFA camps in Abyei in the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased and three others are accused of illegally and forcibly violating the security perimeter of UN facilities. The peacekeepers tried to stop them in vain and opened fire, killing one of them and injuring the other.

“Despite repeated warnings, the intruders attacked the peacekeepers, escalating the situation and necessitating the use of force,” the statement read in part.

UNISFA said its personnel quickly provided medical assistance and transported the injured to Level II hospital for immediate and appropriate care.

“Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to his injuries en route,” the statement noted, adding: “We extend our deepest condolences to the affected families and reaffirm our commitment to transparency as part of our investigation into this matter.

The peacekeeping mission said it was engaging in dialogue with the Juba-appointed administration and community leaders on the issue, while pledging peace and security.

“UNISFA remains dedicated to its mission of maintaining peace and security in Abyei and ensuring the well-being of its residents,” the statement said.
