Ukraine arrests citizens over alleged attempt to overthrow regime…

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed responsibility on Monday for the arrest of several individuals involved in a coup attempt. Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office said at least four individuals were involved and that it had detained two of them. The SBU foiled the individuals' plans at an early stage and prevented their implementation, it said. The individuals face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Have the authorities provided any details on how this coup worked? The individuals had planned to pass off their protest as a peaceful rally in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev and take control of government buildings, authorities said. The leaders of the alleged coup planned to spread the news of their takeover in domestic and foreign media, the SBU said. Ukrainian authorities said the coup would play into Russia's hands.

Has Russia said anything about this? Russian state media outlet TASS relayed the SBU statement, without providing a response from the Kremlin. RT, another Kremlin-controlled outlet, did the same.
