UEFA investigates alleged racist chants by Serbian fans during England match

UEFA is investigating allegations of discriminatory chanting by Serbian fans during England's 1-0 victory in the opening Euro 2024 match in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

England players were reportedly the target of racist abuse during the match, although the PA news agency understands no complaints were made from the England camp.

The Kosovo federation had complained to UEFA about Serbian flags, songs and banners during the match which, according to it, contained “political, chauvinistic and racist messages against Kosovo”.

UEFA has confirmed that an ethics and disciplinary inspector will carry out an investigation into “alleged discriminatory behaviour” by Serbian fans, which is expected to take several weeks.

Serbia was also officially charged with two counts, for its fans displaying a banner that “conveyed a provocative message inappropriate for a sporting event” and for throwing objects inside the stadium.

In November, Serbia were ordered to play their Euro 2024 qualifier against Bulgaria in a partially closed stadium after racist abuse marred their victory against Montenegro.
