UCLA police arrest 18-year-old accused of attacking protesters – NBC Los Angeles

UCLA police said they made their first arrest after a group of instigators showed up on campus on May 1 and attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment on campus.

Edan On, 18, was arrested and booked for felonious assault with a deadly weapon. One is not a UCLA student, faculty, or staff member.

According to detectives, a pole was thrown and seriously injured at least one person. Detectives used photos, surveillance cameras and cellphone videos from the night of the attack to identify the attackers.

Some students said they were happy to hear that arrests were being made, but still believed law enforcement and UCLA officials could do more.

“I'm glad that action is finally being taken against these instigators and yet, at the same time, I don't feel like the UCLA police or the UCLA administration have done enough to pursue the instigators,” said Isabella Crone-Baron, a student at UCLA.

Another student said the video evidence may not tell the whole story and that On may be defending himself.

“He should be able to explain his side of things, there might be more to it, maybe someone attacked him right before that, we just don't know,” said Jon Jenkins, a student senior at UCLA.

This arrest is just the latest development in another long week for the University.

On May 22, UCLA fired and reassigned Police Chief John Thomas, who was criticized for the police response after violence broke out on campus.

On May 23, Chancellor Gene Block faced tough questions about protests and violence when he testified before a House committee.

As Block testified, another camp formed on campus. This time, the police reacted much earlier and dismantled the organization within hours of its creation.

We are being held on $30,000 bail.

As the investigation continues, detectives are asking anyone with information about the May Day attacks to contact the UCLA Police Department.
