U.S. Police and Fire Championships kick off in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The 57th annual USA Police and Fire Championships kicked off this weekend in San Diego, taking place at more than 25 locations across San Diego County from Saturday, June 8 through Saturday June 15.

Nearly 3,000 first responders from across the country are in town for this Olympic-style sporting event that includes competition in 38 different sports, from hockey and bench press to pickle ball and track and field.

On Sunday, participants threw their best shots during the cornhole competition.

“Everyone comes together. We made so many friends doing this. No matter what department you come from, we all become friends,” said Brian McDonald, an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.

The U.S. Police and Fire Championships have been held in San Diego since 1967.

Jim King, president of the California Police Athletic Federation, says the general idea was to promote physical fitness, but also to create camaraderie among different law enforcement groups.

“It’s an opportunity to let loose and reconnect with people.” Our slogan is competition, camaraderie and commitment,” King said.

An awards ceremony takes place after each competition in which participants win gold, silver and bronze medals.
