Two women found shot to death on Roosevelt Avenue in Carteret – NBC New York

A woman was killed and another was seriously injured in a double shooting in a New Jersey town, law enforcement said, as police search for the suspected shooter.

Police responded to the shooting Tuesday morning outside a home on Roosevelt Avenue in Carteret, according to borough Mayor Dan Reiman. Two women were found with gunshot wounds in a driveway and both were airlifted to nearby hospitals in critical condition, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said.

One of the women died from her injuries, while she was still in critical condition. The identity of the deceased victim is being withheld until family can be notified.

The incident shut down parts of the Carteret business district and led to the closure of the nearby Minue School, located a half-mile from the shooting, as a precaution.

Investigators with the Carteret Police Department and the County Attorney's Office shared a photo (below) of a man in his 20s or 30s believed to be the suspect in the shooting. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect, who was not identified, was still in the area, although he was last seen in the area of ​​Roosevelt Avenue, where the women were found.

Witnesses said they heard half a dozen gunshots around 9 a.m. One man said that just moments after hearing the shots ring out, he saw the suspected shooter.

“As he was getting off, he slowed down and started walking slowly in front of us. My uncle said he saw him put the gun in his left pocket and had a phone in his right hand like s “He was talking to someone,” said the witness, who did not wish to be identified.

Helicopter 4 was above the scene of the possible shooting, where police and first responders were seen combing the area. Officers and K-9 units were also seen roaming the city.

An investigation is underway. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Carteret Police Department or the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
