Humboldt Bay Fire press release:

06/08/2024 at 10:47 p.m. Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a reported structure fire at 2235 3rd St. in Eureka. Humboldt Bay Fire responded with 1 department chief, 3 engines and 1 truck for a total of 13 firefighters. Additionally, two volunteer fire support personnel responded and provided traffic control.

The first unit (Truck 8181) arrived on scene within 5 minutes and reported a fire in progress in a 2 story structure with numerous fires. A quick assessment of the structure was made and the truck began feeding the fire with water from the tank to cool the fire.

Battalion Chief 8103 arrived on scene, established Incident Command (IC), and assigned Truck 8181 to the search. The second arriving unit was tasked with establishing a water supply and fire attack, with the primary objective of controlling fires and protecting against exposure. The third unit to arrive was tasked with assisting the fire attack. The fourth unit to arrive was tasked to assist with exposure protection.

A second alarm was requested by the IC, who brought 1 additional engine from Arcata Fire, 1 engine from Samoa Peninsula Fire, and 1 chief officer from HBF to the scene.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes and no occupants were found in the residence. Humboldt Bay Fire remained on scene for an additional 4 hours to completely extinguish the fire and await the arrival of the crew to complete the demolition of the structure. The damage to the structure from the fire was significant enough that it was no longer stable and posed a safety risk. It was therefore demolished.

The cause of the fire was ruled accidental. PG&E arrived on scene and confirmed that the electricity and gas services to the residence were disconnected. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries and the property value is estimated at $250,000 and damage from the fire is estimated at $150,000.

Humboldt Bay Fire would like to thank PG&E, Arcata Fire, Samoa Peninsula Fire, the City of Eureka and EPD for their assistance on scene and covering other emergency calls during this incident.
