Two seriously injured in Southbridge stabbing, suspect held without bail

SOUTHBRIDGE — Two people suffered life-threatening injuries in a stabbing attack at a North Street apartment Sunday evening, according to Southbridge police.

Around 10:18 p.m., dispatched officers observed a chaotic scene with several individuals outside the building asking for help.

A man came out of the apartment with multiple stab wounds, and a female victim was discovered unconscious inside, also with multiple stab wounds.

Both victims were quickly transported to UMASS Medical Center – Worcester University Campus for emergency treatment.

A third victim was treated at UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Memorial for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the incident.

Police identified Ismael Caraballo Vargas, 47, as the suspect, who was apparently still armed inside the apartment.

With additional support from police K9 units, detectives and troopers from the Sturbridge State Police Barracks, Vargas was apprehended after leaving the room and secured by authorities.

Vargas, of 92 North Street, Floor 2, received medical treatment for minor injuries before being taken to police headquarters.

He was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Following his arraignment in Dudley District Court on Tuesday, Vargas was held without bail.

The Massachusetts State Police – Worcester Detective Unit is assisting in the ongoing investigation and no further details have been released at this time.
