Two people rescued from Westborough fire – NBC Boston

“Around 1:50 or so all the alarms in the apartment woke us up and now here we are. »

Thomas Cardinale and his girlfriend climbed out of the window of their smoke-filled apartment only to find themselves trapped on a burning roof.

Firefighters in Westborough, Massachusetts, rescued them from a fire early Sunday morning.

“There were just flames going like crazy up there,” he added.

Westborough firefighters responded to 22-26 South St. for reports of a structure fire around 1:55 a.m.

The majority of the fire originated from the rear of a commercial building, which includes a restaurant and a residential apartment.

The man who lives in the building and his girlfriend climbed out of the window and got stuck on the roof.

Westborough firefighters rescued them via ground ladders while simultaneously spraying the building. They received assistance from the Northborough Southborough Hopkinton Grafton and Framingham fire departments.

“We're a small town, we have a decent staff for a small town, but it's a challenge when we have life safety issues and we have to do both operations at the same time.” Westborough Fire Chief Patrick Purcell said.

The fire chief estimates there is approximately $1 million in damage to the structure and $50,000 in damage to the van.

“It happens, I guess I'm glad everyone's OK and there's no tragedies, we'll say in terms of loss,” Cardinale said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
