two people arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol

ENCINITAS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two people were arrested Friday evening at a checkpoint for driving under the influence in North County, authorities said.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, officers conducted the stop in the 1800 block of S. Coast Highway 101, located in Encinitas, between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday.

A total of 680 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and authorities said 27 motorists were sent for secondary assessment.

Nine drivers performed field sobriety tests and two were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, the sheriff's department confirmed. The identities of those arrested were not immediately released.

The Sheriff's Department reiterated the following message to the public:

“Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We also want to remind the public that driving under the influence of alcohol is not just about drinking alcohol. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can impair driving. While medical and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.”
