Two Orovillians identified in fatal car crash

The Butte County Coroner's Office has identified two people who died in a June 4 car crash on Highway 70 near Oroville: Beatrice Higgins, 62, of Oroville and James Moore Jr., 58, of 'Oroville.

The California Highway Patrol said that at the time of the crash, it appeared the Volkswagen Higgins and Moore were in had stopped unexpectedly on the highway at the Feather River Bridge and a pickup truck Ram had crashed there.

The CHP believes Higgins and Moore were not wearing seat belts.

Chico Airport Burn

Approximately 185 acres of controlled burns are planned for 8 a.m. Wednesday near the Chico Regional Airport, the Chico Fire Department announced in a news release Tuesday. Planes planning to land or take off were informed of the fire.

Battalion Chief Mike Watner said the controlled burn would provide a valuable training opportunity for the department.

New recruit

The Chico Police Department posted on its social media Monday evening the newest member to join the team, K-9 Creed, a 1.5-year-old German Shepherd from Florida. Creed began serving with his Office handler Juan Valencia on June 6.

Bangor Fire

Cal Fire-Butte County Fire Capt. Dan Collins said the department quickly contained a 1.8-acre fire reported around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday near the 5700 block of La Porte Road in Bangor.

Collins said five engines, a crew, a chief officer and two water tenders responded. No structures or injuries were reported.

Eaton reversal

Chico Police responded to a call of a vehicle crash that caused the car to overturn around 3:20 p.m. Monday near the stop sign for the Eaton Road Overpass near Highway 99.

Kelly DeLeon, communications specialist for the police department, said a collision caused one minor injury and traffic delays; officers diverted southbound traffic for approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
