Two drivers arrested in separate drunken driving crashes near Texas Southern University, where shooting victim sought police help

HOUSTON – Houston police had an interesting start to their Fourth of July when a shooting victim approached them while they were investigating a drunk driving crash in Third Ward. Moments later, a second drunk driving crash occurred at the same scene.

According to Lt. Riley of the Houston Police Department, it all started around 2 a.m. when a club on Emancipation Avenue near Texas Southern University began letting people out. At some point, a fight broke out and escalated into a shooting, in which at least one woman was shot in the shoulder.

About a mile away, in the 2200 block of Wheeler Ave., Lt. Riley said HPD and the Houston Fire Department were investigating a drunken driving crash. No injuries were reported, but police had one driver in custody. That's when the unidentified woman approached medics and explained how she had been hit in the crossfire outside the club.

As emergency crews treated the shooting victim's injuries and police investigated the crash, Lt. Riley said another drunk driver struck one of the tow trucks. That driver was also arrested.

No additional information has been shared at the time of writing, but authorities are continuing their investigation into all three respective cases.
