Two Dead, Child Injured After Deadly Fire in Largo – NBC4 Washington

Two residents are dead and a child is seriously injured after a fire broke out at the North Hampton Apartments in Largo, Maryland.

The Prince George's County Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at a residential building at 81 Harry S. Truman Drive before 4 a.m., where they found the fire raging through the roof.

Several people were rescued and the roof of the building collapsed.

Firefighters found a deceased man at the scene and a boy was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

A dog was found not breathing in the apartment but firefighters were able to resuscitate it.

Later Tuesday morning, firefighters discovered a woman under the rubble of the roof while searching the building. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Avery Vick, 18, was one of the residents of the building. The former cadet firefighter said he was able to alert his family about the fire.

Vick said he woke up after hearing a ringing sound and initially thought it was a test alarm.

“But I looked at my time in the morning and it was three o'clock in the morning and I was like, no, this is not a test,” Vick said.

Once Vick smelled smoke near the front door, he woke his parents and made sure they gathered their things before getting out safely.

“The fire was already well underway. The flames were coming out of the back of the apartment. There was a lot of it,” Vick said. “We were standing by the trash cans and I could still feel the heat coming from the building.”

Firefighters were still extinguishing the fire two hours after their first intervention.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
