Two cases of rare blood disorder Hemoglobin D-Punjab identified at Guntur GGH

Doctors at the Government General Hospital (GGH), Guntur, have identified a rare blood disorder associated with hemoglobin D-Punjab in two patients from Srirampuram hamlet in Veldurthi mandal of Palnadu district.

Revealing the details, GGH Superintendent Y. Kiran Kumar said it was a rare case in this region. Doctors from the hospital's pathology department identified the case during random laboratory tests.

He said doctors received blood samples from two patients from the village on May 20. Patients suffer from sickle cell anemia.

“Hemoglobin D-Punjab is prevalent in northern India. This is the first time that this disease has been discovered in Andhra Pradesh. The tests were carried out on anemic patients,” said Dr Kiran Kumar.

He said a bone marrow transplant or stem cell therapy was necessary for patients.
