Two arrested after robbery near North Shore leads to shooting

INDIANAPOLIS — Two people have been arrested after an alleged robbery led to a shooting on Indianapolis' north side early Tuesday morning.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, detectives with the department's Aggravated Assault Unit arrested 20-year-old David Tillman and a 17-year-old accomplice in connection with the reported robbery/shooting.

Shortly after 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, officers from the department's Northern District responded to the 1600 block of College Avenue for a report of a person who had been shot. When police arrived, they found a man on the side of the street with apparent gunshot wounds. The man was transported to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

After the shooting, officers received a description of the suspects from witnesses at the scene, which was then broadcast to other officers in the area via radio.

According to the release, investigators were able to view footage of the incident, which showed a suspect “forcibly removing a firearm from the victim's pocket.” The victim then attempted to retrieve the firearm and a struggle reportedly broke out when the second suspect jumped on the firearm. After the suspects gained control of the firearm, the victim was then allegedly shot.

During the investigation, police learned the suspects may have been spotted nearby as they entered an apartment building. The release states that officers later identified them as the suspects after briefly opening the apartment door. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the apartment and the two suspects, identified as Tillman and the 17-year-old, were taken into custody.

Authorities said a search of the apartment turned up the clothes the two men were wearing in the video of the incident, as well as a handgun and “several individually wrapped bags of narcotics.”

Tillman was arrested on preliminary charges of robbery and aggravated assault, as well as two active Marion County warrants for parole violations. The release said the 17-year-old was also arrested.
