Two arrested after officer-involved shooting in SLC

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Two suspects were arrested – and one of the suspects was injured – after an early morning police-involved shooting in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

The incident began around 12:10 a.m., when officers from the Utah Highway Patrol saw a truck driving at high speed “with vehicle equipment violations,” according to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The news release said the truck fled before officers conducted a traffic stop, but the vehicle was later found after being abandoned near 5650 West and 700 South. UHP requested assistance from SLCPD just before 12:30 a.m., the release said.

While searching for the suspects, an SLCPD officer “fired at least one shot” around 12:40 a.m., the statement said. Authorities provided first aid at the scene and one person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The injured person was one of the suspects, police said, and a second suspect was arrested in connection with the incident.

Additional police and officers, including drone pilots and a canine team, attended the scene to search for other people involved, but no other suspects were located. Police said several investigations related to this incident were ongoing.

“As these investigations progress, additional information may develop that may render some of this information obsolete,” police said in the statement.

As is standard procedure, the officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave.

“This incident appears to have happened very quickly,” Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said. “Our priority is to support the officer involved and enable a full and professional investigation to determine the circumstances and facts. »
