If you want to learn how to work safely with firearms, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office has you covered.

The organization offers free gun safety classes to Tuscaloosa County residents once a month.

According to the American College of Surgeons, many firearm deaths and injuries can be prevented through proper handling.

“We want those who use firearms to know how to use them properly, maintain them and be responsible,” said Jessica McDaniel, TCSO deputy director.

Classes teach participants the cardinal rules of gun safety as well as how to maintain a firearm in good working order.

“We want people to feel more comfortable with their firearms and have a working knowledge of how to use them, so the course is accessible to anyone who meets the requirements,” McDaniel said.

The classes are also an enjoyable experience and help develop relationships within the community.

“It’s a fun Saturday.” Usually the weather is warm during these months and cooler in autumn. It's a pleasant experience. We are able to show people how to use their firearms. They are able to build relationships with us and feel more comfortable around law enforcement. It allows for an individual experience,” McDaniel said.

Classes meet one Saturday per month from March to October. They start around 9 a.m. with a lecture on proper safety and handling. Then there is a lunch break during which a bagged lunch is provided to participants. The rest of the course takes place at the shooting range.

Participants must be at least 19 years old and pass a background check.

If you would like to register, you must complete an application in person at the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office in downtown Tuscaloosa, 714 Greensboro Ave.

The next classes are scheduled for:

  • July 27
  • August 24
  • September 21
  • October 19

Classes are first come, first served and fill up quickly.
