Tuesday's runoff election includes sheriff's races in northeast Georgia

Tuesday's primary runoff election includes three sheriff's races in northeast Georgia.

Voters will go to the polls between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. in several counties where the second round will take place.

The sheriff races are taking place in Elbert, Franklin and Morgan counties, where the incumbent sheriffs in each county have decided not to run for reelection. It was an unusual year with seven Athens-area counties where sitting sheriffs decided not to run for office.

In Franklin County, the Republican primary runoff election pits Scott Andrews, a retired Georgia State Patrol trooper, against Brian Stovall, who is currently a deputy in the office. Sheriff Steve Thomas has decided not to run again.

In the May primary, Andrews narrowly missed the nomination with 49.49% of the vote, according to the Georgia Secretary of State. In the three-candidate race, Stovall came in second with 30.5 percent of the vote.

The Elbert County Sheriff's race in the Democratic Party primary pits Sheriff's Office Captain Darren Scarborough against Elbert County native Dre'Kevious Gibbs.

In the primary, Scarborough received 699 votes to Gibbs' 526. The winner will face Republican candidate Jamie Callaway in the November general election. Sheriff Melvin Andrews was not re-elected.

Morgan County's race in the Republican primary runoff features Joseph Pritchett, a sheriff's office lieutenant, and Tyler Hooks, a veteran of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office. They were the first to get votes in a race featuring seven candidates seeking to replace Sheriff Robert Markley.
