Trump says he would be 'fine' with prison time and house arrest after hush money conviction

Former President Trump said he would be “fine” with a house arrest or prison sentence after being convicted last week on 34 counts in New York.

When asked on Fox News' “Fox and Friends” how he handles the prospect of being sentenced to house arrest or prison, Trump responded: “I'm OK with that “.

“I'm not sure the public would accept it,” Trump said of his potential sentence in an interview Sunday with Fox News' Will Cain, Pete Hegseth and Rachel Campos-Duffy. “I think it would be difficult for the public to accept. At some point there is a breaking point. »

The former president was convicted last week of 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York, becoming the first former U.S. president to become a convicted felon. The charges centered on reimbursements made to former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen for a secret payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

He is scheduled to be sentenced July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Trump's legal team has vowed to appeal the case, but the proceedings are currently expected to move forward as scheduled.

As the primary offender for falsifying business records, Trump likely won't face prison time, especially since he has no criminal record. He is more likely to face a lesser sanction, such as a fine.

Trump told Fox and Friends that he advised his lawyers not to “beg for anything,” noting that “it is what it is.”

He also spoke about the impact this conviction had on his family and those around him.

“I think in many ways it's harder for them than it is for me. They’re good people, all… everyone, everyone,” he said.

“I have a wonderful wife who has to listen to this stuff all the time. They do it for this reason. They do this, all these salacious names they give to these people, and I don't even have the right to defend myself because of the silence. Think about it,” Trump said, without specifying who “they” are. “But they put this stuff in there to wreak havoc. They are bad people; I know everything they do. I know their every move; I understand.”

He then said former first lady Melania Trump was doing “fine,” while noting that it was “very difficult for her” amid media coverage of the trial and sentencing.
