Trump 'incites violence' with threat of public 'breaking point'

Rep. Adam Schiff warned that Donald Trump was “inciting violence” when he said the American public would reach a “breaking point” if they were placed under house arrest or sentenced to prison.

“I'm not sure the public would stand for it,” Trump said in a Fox News interview broadcast Sunday. “I think it would be difficult for the public to accept. At some point there is a breaking point. »

Trump was convicted on 34 counts last week in New York for falsifying business records. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.

“As for Donald Trump's comments about whether the public reaches a breaking point if he is sentenced to prison, this is clearly Donald Trump once again inciting violence, to potential violence, when he is convicted,” Schiff said Sunday during an appearance on CNN. State of the Union.

“We see this pattern over and over again, where Donald Trump communicates with his base supporters, making clear what he wants to see, and then his enablers try to explain it,” said Schiff, a candidate for a Senate seat. California, said host Kasie Hunt. “His base is listening…And it’s another dangerous call to violence.”

When Hunt asked Schiff about the sentence prosecutors should seek for Trump, the congressman said Trump's sentence should be consistent with other similar cases. “I think what the prosecutors should do, and, for that matter, what the judge should do, is look at what the sentences are in New York for criminals like those who have committed crimes of the same nature than those committed by Donald Trump? They should recommend a punishment no greater and no less than that which any other citizen would face for committing these kinds of crimes.

Schiff went on to point out that Trump has not accepted responsibility or shown remorse: “Now I think the judge should ask himself, as any judge would against any defendant, whether the defendant accepted his responsibility? Have they shown remorse? Are they ready to make restitution? In this case, as you can see from the moment he walked out of the courthouse, Donald Trump showed no acceptance of responsibility, and that should be weighed against him, as the judge would against any American found guilty of several counts and taking no responsibility.

He added that Judge Juan Merchan should consider Trump's threat of a public “breaking point” when sentencing him.

Tendency

“That's basically his threat: If he gets a prison sentence, he will encourage his supporters to rise up,” Schiff said. “And we saw the very deadly results of that on January 6th. So I don't think the public will respond to this call. I hope we have learned something from the terrible experience of January 6.

“What Donald Trump is suggesting here is very clear,” Schiff concluded. “This is something… that the judge must also take into consideration, so as not to be intimidated by this threat, but as additional proof, this accused not only does not accept his responsibility, but is prepared to put people in danger.”
