Trump calls on Supreme Court to intervene after historic conviction

Former President Donald Trump urged the Supreme Court to intervene after his conviction on all counts in his secret trial Sunday, lamenting to his supporters that a sentencing hearing was scheduled just days before the Republican National Convention.

“The 'conviction' for doing nothing wrong will take place, convenient for fascists, 4 days before the Republican National Convention,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “A radical left-backed DA Soros, who ran on an 'I'll have Trump' platform, reporting to a HIGHLY CONFLICTED, Democratic-appointed 'acting' local judge, will make a decision that will determine the future of our nation?

“The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE!” »

A jury found Trump guilty of all 34 charges against him in the trial, acknowledging that he falsified business records to cover up allegations of a sexual relationship with porn star Stormy Daniels. The verdict makes him the first president in American history to be declared a criminal, although it is unclear what impact this historic designation will have on the November elections.

Trump, as he did throughout the trial, reacted with fury to the decision, attacking the justice system, the judge who oversaw the case and anyone critical of his actions. He vowed to appeal the verdict.

He is scheduled to be sentenced July 11, and each count carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison. But even if he was convicted on all counts, legal experts say he is unlikely to serve prison time because the charges constitute New York's lowest level of crime . Other options could include probation or fines.

In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump said he would be “OK” with imprisonment or home confinement, and said “it could happen.” But he warned the presenters that he was not sure the audience would “put up with it”.

“I think it would be difficult for the public to accept,” the former president said. “You know, at some point there’s a breaking point.”

Trump also called on the Supreme Court, which currently has six conservative members, to side with his claims that he has broad presidential immunity from prosecution. If they agreed, the ruling would likely free him from two charges for his behavior during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

The court will rule on the matter at the end of its current term.
