Trump asks Supreme Court to block conviction over New York conviction

Presidential candidate Donald Trump on Sunday asked the Supreme Court to intervene in his hush money case before he is sentenced.

Judge Juan Merchan is expected to sentence Trump on July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention, where the former president is expected to be nominated as the party's presidential nominee. This comes more than a month after the Manhattan jury found Trump guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records.

“The 'conviction' for doing nothing wrong will take place, convenient for fascists, 4 days before the Republican National Convention,” Trump wrote Sunday evening on Truth Social. “A radical left-backed DA Soros, who ran on an 'I'll have Trump' platform, reporting to a HIGHLY CONFLICTED, Democratic-appointed 'acting' local judge, will make a decision that will determine the future of our Nation? The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE! »

Trump's lawyer, Todd Blanche, said it was unlikely that Trump's team would request that his sentencing date be postponed. He planned to meet that date because they “want to appeal,” he told CBS News.

Another Trump lawyer, Will Scharf, signaled to CNN on Friday his intention to seek the Supreme Court's opinion. “We will take this case as high and as far as necessary, including to the United States Supreme Court, to vindicate President Trump’s rights,” he said.

A Manhattan jury convicted Trump criminally Thursday after hearing testimony that he paid hush money to several women in 2018 who claimed they had an affair with him. Trump himself did not testify and maintained his innocence.

The Supreme Court has been active in cases involving Trump. In March, the nation's highest court ruled that states could not exclude him from their respective elections in November. He also heard arguments for Trump's presidential immunity, aiming to set a precedent among the 54 other charges brought against him by prosecutors across the country.
