Trump asks Supreme Court for help as he awaits secret sentencing

Donald Trump has called on the Supreme Court to rule on his hush money case as his sentencing approaches next month.

The former president, who was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records, is scheduled to be sentenced July 11, four days before the Republican National Convention begins in Milwaukee. He vowed to appeal his historic conviction on charges related to his efforts to illegally influence the 2016 election with a scheme to conceal a secret payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

John Oliver shares his deeply cynical verdict on Trump

“The 'conviction' for doing nothing wrong will take place, convenient for fascists, 4 days before the Republican National Convention,” Trump wrote Sunday evening on his Truth Social platform.

“A radical left-backed DA Soros, who ran on an 'I'll have Trump' platform, reporting to a local 'acting' Democratic-appointed judge who is HIGHLY CONFLICTED, will make a decision that will determine the future of our nation? he added. “The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE!” »

The presumptive 2024 Republican nominee said last week he would appeal the “scam” verdict, although Trump lawyer Todd Blanche told CBS News on Friday that the process “starts after the conviction” .

If his appeal fails in New York state courts, Trump's lawyers could appeal to the Supreme Court if they can convince at least four of its nine justices to hear the case. Trump would then have to demonstrate how the trial violated his federal constitutional rights.

His call for the high court to “decide” comes after House Speaker Mike Johnson said last week that the Supreme Court “should intervene.”

“It's totally unprecedented,” Johnson said of Trump's conviction during a Friday appearance on Fox and friends, adding that the verdict is “dangerous for our system”. “It diminishes the confidence of the American people in our justice system itself,” he added.
