Truck theft investigation leads to chase, officer involved in shooting

STOCKBRIDGE – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a police officer involved shooting that occurred during a chase in a stolen truck.

The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Henry County, Georgia. The Henry County Police Department requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on June 8, 2024. Although no one was shot during this incident, one officer was injured. A man is in police custody.

Preliminary information indicates that around 4:35 p.m., Henry County Police officers located a stolen truck on Business Center Drive in Stockbridge, Georgia. While attempting to stop the stolen truck, the driver, later identified as Daniel Jay Waldrop, 31, of McDonough, Georgia, drove the stolen truck toward an officer's patrol car, striking the car as the officer attempted to have Waldrop arrested. . The officer shot Waldrop, but Waldrop was not hit by the gunfire. Waldrop left and officers chased him from the scene, beginning a lengthy car chase. Multiple agencies helped stop the chase and take Waldrop into custody.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Henry County Prosecutor's Office for review.
