Tripura News: Youth arrested for human trafficking

The Agartala Government Railway Police Station (GRPS) apprehended a youth, allegedly involved in human trafficking, from Matai Bazar under Belonia police station in South Tripura district early on Sunday. The arrested youth was identified as Jhutan Datta (28), son of Lieutenant Jyoti Lal Datta. He was arrested on charges related to international human trafficking. Datta was on the police's wanted list in an old case (Case No. 190/2023) when four illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested at Agartala railway station.

According to officer-in-charge Tapas Das, during interrogation of the detained Bangladeshi nationals, the name of Jhutan Datta emerged as the one who facilitated their illegal crossing of the border. Acting on specific information, police conducted a raid today early in the morning at Matai Bazar near Belonia police station, which resulted in the arrest of Datta.

It should be noted that this is not the first run-in with the law for Datta. Earlier, he was apprehended by the Guwahati branch of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on similar charges of human trafficking.

The accused will be produced before the court for further legal proceedings, as confirmed by police authorities.
