Tributes pour in for 'hard-working and popular' Cavan teenager killed in tragic work accident

Tributes have poured in for a 17-year-old Co Cavan boy who died in a “devastating” work accident earlier this week.

Reece Donohoe from Kilnaleck was killed on Thursday afternoon during his shift at Wilton Recycling Center in Crosserlough, Cavan.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene after being alerted to an incident at around 4.30pm.

The teenager, described as a “gentle soul”, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed from the scene and taken to Cavan Mortuary, with a post-mortem to take place in due course.

As a mark of respect, the Wilton Recycling Plant has confirmed it will close its doors until further notice.

Reece's heartbroken family members and friends have since expressed their loss on social media.

His sister wrote: “No words. I love you my precious little brother,” while the teenager’s uncle said: “You meant everything to me Reece, you were everything to me. My heart is broken. Rest in peace, sweet nephew.

Another family member added: “I'm going to be so lost without you and I'm going to miss you so much. I never got the chance to tell you how proud I was of you. My heart is broken.'

Local councilor Trevor Smith told the Irish Daily Mail that the community of Kilnaleck and beyond were “completely in shock”.

“This is a terrible tragedy in our area and we are all devastated for this young man’s parents, siblings, family and friends.

“I am confident that the community will support them in any way possible and I wish to offer them my deepest condolences at this sad time.”

“He was a hardworking and popular young man.”

Fine Gael councilor Winston Bennett added: “This is a devastating loss for the area. My heart goes out to his family and everyone who knew him, including his co-workers.

It is understood Reece came from a respected family and had a passion for farming and cars. He had taken a job at a recycling facility during his summer vacation from school.
