In the news: Teen charged with murder in Soho shooting

TEENAGER CHARGED WITH MURDER IN SOHO SHOOTING
NBC New York reports that a 19-year-old has been charged with murder in the shooting of the teen in the public space just east of the Dominick Hotel. from NBC: “Henry Thomas was arrested by U.S. Marshals Friday afternoon in Harlem in connection with the May 7 fatal shooting of Mahki Brown, 16, in SoHo, police said.” Mahki attended Broome Street Academy Charter High School just down the street.

FORENSICS ON ANN STREET GARAGE
Crain's reports that the Department of Buildings determined that the Ann Street garage was not overloaded when it collapsed, but they have not yet shared a copy of the report. From Crain's: “Last week, relatives of the mechanic killed in the collapse — Willis Moore, 59 — filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the garage's owners, 57 Ann Street Realty Associates. The company's principals are identified in city records as Alan and Jeffrey Henick; prosecutors have not announced any charges against them.

FEARLESS GIRL CANNOT BE REPLICATED BY THE ARTIST
US News reports that the sculptor who created “Fearless Girl” has settled a lawsuit brought by State Street Global Advisers, which installed the statue, to prevent the artist from selling replicas. The lawsuit said his “retorts undermined his message that responsible companies support gender diversity and women leaders help them perform better.” He also said the unauthorized replicas damaged his reputation and constituted copyright and trademark infringement.

OFFICE VACANCY RATES INCREASE IN LOWER MANHATTAN
Crain's reports that the office vacancy rate is as high as 24.7 percent, according to the Downtown Alliance (I haven't read their annual report yet, but I will). Rents for these spaces are also falling, to $59 per square foot, compared to $85 in Midtown. But tourism is on the rise. The district's 43 hotels recorded an occupancy rate of 74 percent, the highest in the first quarter since 2008.
