A teenager who died after falling from the 35th floor of a hotel had tragically lost his mother in a car crash just weeks earlier.

Tyler Mason, 15, died after falling from the balcony of the Meriton Suites hotel in Parramatta, western Sydney, around 11.30pm on March 14.

His death was initially ruled a suicide, but his heartbroken family says the teen would never have killed himself.

Her mother was traveling in a car with a male acquaintance in Queensland in late February when she was killed in a single-vehicle crash.

Tyler's aunt Jo-Ellen Hall, who works as a mental health nurse, told Daily Mail Australia she regularly checked on her nephew after his mother's death.

Tyler's mother had struggled with drug addiction and he had been placed in foster care throughout his life.

Ms Hall said her nephew tried to sabotage his foster placement because he just wanted to be with his mother and “save” her from her battles with addiction.

He was reported missing in August last year. Ms Hall said he was on the run and appeared to be living with his mother at the time.

At the time of his death, Tyler was in the care of Big Brown House, an organization that supports vulnerable children and families.

“I put on my nursing hat and said 'we need to talk about mom, how are you feeling?' ” and he said 'I'm fine, I knew this would happen,'” Ms Hall said.

“I said 'you wouldn't do anything stupid, would you?' ” and Tyler said ” oh no aunt Jo, only weak people kill themselves “.

It is understood Tyler drank around three drinks in five hours, but just before 10pm he became seriously ill, began foaming at the mouth and could no longer walk or speak properly.

He fell from the balcony around 11:28 p.m.

A few hours earlier, he had filmed himself singing and smiling in the elevator on his way up to the hotel room.

He was later seen dancing and singing to Eminem's Without Me with a friend.

A police investigation is still underway into this incident, which was initially considered a suicide.

“There is no chance it was suicide,” Ms Hall said.

“It is 100 percent clear that this boy was not capable of jumping off the balcony.”

Ms Hall discovered Tyler dead early in the morning after he fell from the balcony.

Since then, she has called police nearly 60 times trying to get answers about her nephew's death.

“If it was suicide, I wouldn’t do it. There is no part of me that thinks it was suicide, absolutely none,” she said.

Timeline of the tragedy

The night he died, Tyler filmed himself in the elevator up to the 35th floor.

'Do you know where I am? Meriton Suites, boy! » he said, sounding happy and excited about this evening.

Tyler was with five other people in the hotel room. One of them was 18 years old. Minors had to be registered at reception.

When Tyler started feeling unwell around 10 p.m., a call was made to an adult family friend.

This friend arrived at Meriton, but when no one came down from the room to let him in, he left the premises.

As Tyler's condition gradually worsened over the course of the night, he began vomiting, was stripped naked and put in the shower.

Around 11 p.m., Tyler was carried to a couch in the hotel room to lie down.

One of the teenagers in the room allegedly brandished a knife as the group reportedly argued and shouted at each other.

About half an hour later, Tyler fell from the balcony.

A second call was made to the family friend around 11:34 p.m., and the adult rushed to the hotel.

A call to Triple Zero was made just before midnight.

Ms. Hall believes Tyler may have overdosed on drugs, although this has not been verified.

She said that to her knowledge, the other teenagers in the hotel room had not yet been formally interviewed by police and appeared to be “keeping a low profile” since the incident.

The teenager who allegedly brandished the knife fled the scene after Tyler fell because they were under a court-ordered curfew, according to reports from Daily Mail Australia.

A report on Tyler's death is being prepared for the coroner.

In the first weeks after Tyler's death, his family was trying to come to terms with the fact that he had supposedly committed suicide.

“But after the funeral, we started to understand why he was naked and why he was foaming at the mouth?” » said Ms. Hall.

“We have videos of him dancing and singing happily.”

Tyler was known to police and had spent time in juvenile detention, his aunt said.

Ms Hall says that after his mother died, the teenager turned his life around and returned to school.

He had a 9 p.m. curfew at Big Brown House, and the organization allegedly called the police when he didn't return.

Ms Hall said she called police almost every day to try to speak to the investigating officer, but claims she was repeatedly ignored.

“Like I’m doing this for fun,” she said.

A report for the coroner is expected later this month. The coroner will then decide whether an inquest should be held.

NSW Police said it does not comment on matters before the coroner and did not respond to specific questions relating to the case.

The Meriton Hotel said assistance had been provided to police with their investigation but could not comment further.

Big Brown House CEO Christopher Brown said the organization was supporting the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) and the police in their investigation.

“As this is an open police investigation, we cannot make any comment at this time,” he said.

“We can confirm that our staff have followed policies and procedures and our deepest sympathies go out to Tyler’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
