Tragic shooting in Statesboro leaves father dead and son in custody

A tragic shooting occurred Monday evening in the quiet Oakfield neighborhood north of Statesboro, resulting in the death of a 57-year-old man identified as Tony Connely. The suspect, who was revealed to be the victim's son, 24-year-old Brandon Connely, is now in custody after turning himself in to authorities at the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office.

The disturbing events began when Bulloch County 911 dispatchers received a distress call at 7:26 p.m. on June 10, 2024, reporting a shooting in the 9000 block of Oakfield Drive. Upon arrival on scene, Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies confirmed the tragic loss of Tony Connely to gunshot wounds, after the shooter had already fled the scene.

Officers quickly secured the scene and Bulloch County paramedics assisted the victim's wife, who had taken shelter with a neighbor and fortunately escaped physical harm during the incident.

A coordinated effort involving Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies, the Georgia State Patrol and Statesboro police officers was launched to locate the shooter. After seeing the suspect's vehicle several times, Brandon Connely drove to the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office parking lot around 8 p.m. and turned himself in to authorities.

Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown revealed to Grice Connect that Brandon Connely has a history of multiple arrests related to domestic violence incidents, with his last arrest being in 2021. The community remains shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of life human in this domestic tragedy. .
