TRAGIC END: 1 girl kidnapped dead and another found safe; suspect arrested | State

LORANGER, La. (WDSU) — A search for two missing Louisiana girls has ended in tragedy.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office was notified by the Mississippi U.S. Marshals that they had arrested Daniel Callahan in Jackson, Mississippi, on a murder charge after a county-wide AMBER Alert was issued. Status on Thursday June 13.

The sheriff's office said Callahan led authorities to his car, where 6-year-old Jalie Brunett was found alive. He then led police to the body of 4-year-old Erin Brunett.

LORANGER, La. — Louisiana State Police have issued an AMBER Alert on behalf of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office for Erin Brunett, 3, and Jalie Brunett, 6, who were abducted.

Callahan and the girls' mother, Callie Brunett, were in a relationship, according to Sheriff Daniel Edwards. Callahan is believed to have killed her, he added.

Callahan was found after a suspicious person report in Jackson. A brief chase with Callahan led to his arrest.

Louisiana State Police issued the AMBER Alert for the missing girls shortly after noon.

Edwards said the murder investigation began Thursday morning on North Cooper Road in Loranger. Callie Brunett, 35, of Loranger, was found dead in her home after going missing for more than a day. Her two young children, Jalie, 6, and Erin, 4, were reported missing.

According to Edwards, deputies have not been able to question Callahan at this time.
