Traffic Police: Traffic police have identified 59 places requiring separators and 38 places requiring traffic signals in Mumbai | Mumbai News

Mumbai: In an audit of the city’s roads, the Mumbai Traffic Police has identified stretches where road infrastructure, such as separators or traffic signals, is missing or needs to be improved. The audit report has also identified places with sharp turns that could lead to accidents. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Anil Kumbhare has sent the report to the BMC, and work has already begun at a few places. The audit report lists 59 places where separators need to be built and 38 places where traffic signals are required. At 33 places, the separators were found to be too short and at four places, they were not required at all. Nineteen places with blind turns and 40 accident-prone “black spots” have also been identified. “There have been instances where vehicles have hit separators, for example near the beginning of a flyover. Based on our suggestion, the BMC has installed reflectors and cat eyes to alert motorists,” said a traffic police officer. Reflectors have been installed at Kalanagar and Shivaji Park, among other places. Dhawal Ashar, programme manager at non-profit organisation WRI India, suggested that the traffic police and the BMC work together to audit the existing road infrastructure in the city to identify potential road safety hazards. “This audit can identify dangerous crossings, inaccessible islands, lack of speed limit, blind spots and other visibility issues. A night audit can include lighting and other visibility and speed issues,” he said. The audit can also identify “pinch points” on city roads that hamper contiguous vehicular traffic, Ashar suggested, adding: “These issues can be categorised into three categories: infrastructure issues that require infrastructure interventions, enforcement issues that require enforcement interventions and engagement issues which are short-term issues that can be addressed by engaging with relevant stakeholders. This will facilitate appropriate action.” A BMC official said reports submitted by the traffic police are usually sent to the concerned civic ward for action. “In case the road is under concreting, the contractor is asked to construct or install the road infrastructure,” he added.
