Tracy evacuates as Corral Fire consumes 5,000 acres and closes I-580

An evacuation warning was issued for parts of Tracy Saturday evening as firefighters battled a blaze that jumped Interstate 580, according to Cal Fire.

Cal Fire and the Alameda County Fire Department have contained 40% of the Corral Fire, which was approximately 5,000 acres and started Saturday afternoon. Two firefighters were injured, said Baraka Carter, Cal Fire Santa Clara unit chief.

Around 6:30 p.m., San Joaquin County Emergency Services advised residents in the area east of I-580, between Corral Hollow Road and South Tracy Boulevard, to leave immediately. Residents south of Tracy Boulevard should be ready to leave, they said.

I-580 was closed in both directions from Corral Hollow Road to Interstate 5 due to fire, smoke and poor visibility, according to Caltrans, which did not have an estimated reopening time .

A dry west wind quickly pushed the fire eastward from its starting point at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site 300, on the border of San Joaquin and Alameda counties. Gusts of up to 43 mph were measured along I-580 near the fire, temperatures were in the upper 70s and relative humidity was around 30% as of 7 p.m. Strong gusts are expected to continue through the evening and slowly ease overnight.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
