Tottenham Hotspur 'identify' Monaco defender as Emerson Royal replacement

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly earmarked Monaco full-back Vanderson as a replacement for Emerson Royal.

Ange Postecoglou is overhauling his squad in his third transfer window as Tottenham boss, having already bid farewell to Eric Dier, Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga.

Emerson is also set to leave the North London club despite being regarded as a popular member of the Tottenham squad.

The Brazilian had to settle for a bench role for the majority of the 2023-24 season after starting just 11 of his 22 Premier League appearances.

Although Emerson showcased his versatility last term, Spurs are willing to sanction his departure to allow the defender to gain more game time elsewhere.

Spurs identify Vanderson as Emerson Royal replacement

According to journalist Fabrizio RomanoTottenham could pursue a move for Vanderson if Emerson leaves the club this summer.

Vanderson is one of the options being considered by Tottenham, but they may find it difficult to take him away from the Principality due to Monaco's asking price.

The Ligue 1 club are set to demand in excess of €40m (£33.8m), and they are under no pressure to sell after Vanderson signed a new contract in February to extend his deal until the summer of 2028.

The update also reinforces the belief that Emerson will leave his summer, with Italian giants AC Milan understood to be his preferred destination.

Who is Monaco's Brazilian right-back?

Tottenham have ultimately seen enough of Vanderson to be impressed by his ability despite the fact his most recent campaign was hindered by a couple of injury issues.

The right-back managed to make 20 Ligue 1 appearances during the 2023-24 season, contributing to Monaco's attacking efforts with three goals and one assist.

In total, Vanderson has recorded six goals and nine assists in 84 competitive matches since he joined the Ligue 1 club from Gremio in January 2022.

The 22-year-old has made a couple of appearances for Brazil, but he was not included in the squad for the upcoming Copa America in the USA.
