Tornillo woman arrested after allegedly possessing cocaine in vehicle

Genoveva Carrillo Esparza

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A Tornillo woman was arrested and charged with possession of two packages of cocaine hidden where three children were sitting in her vehicle, according to the El Paso County Police Department, Precinct 6.

Genoveva Carrillo Esparza, 27, was stopped by a deputy trooper for a traffic stop around 8 a.m. Monday, June 10, along the 19300 block of Cobb in Fabens, according to the trooper's office.

Carrillo Esparza's SUV was stopped because it had an expired Texas buyer's tag, the police office said.

Inside Carrillo Esparza's vehicle were another woman and three children ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old.

The deputy constable observed the driver acting nervously, then questioned the two women, whose stories were conflicting, the constable's office said.

The deputy then obtained verbal permission to search Carrillo Esparza's vehicle and found two packages containing a white substance under the children's seat, according to the officer's office. The white substance tested positive for cocaine, the police bureau said.

Carrillo Esparza was placed under arrest and faces a charge of manufacture or delivery of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance over 400 grams. The total weight of the two packages was 5.93 pounds, according to the constable's office.

Carrillo Esparza was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center on $100,000 bail, according to the Constable's Office.

If convicted, Carrillo Esparza faces a sentence of five to 99 years in prison and a fine of not more than $10,000, the police bureau said.
